You haven't lived if you've never had good ol' Southern American food for brunch. What could be better than feasting on fried chicken an hour after you wake up? Mmmm.
A cozy little place called The Southern opened up a few months ago in Mahboula, and along with a couple of friends, I ventured into the South to see what all the fuss is about. The restaurant itself is bigger than I though it would be, with an outdoor seating area that will be perfect in the cooler months. Imagine yourself on a terrace with the cool breeze hitting your face while stuffing your face with blueberry cobbler. Sold yet?
If not, take a look at the pictures. They're worth a thousand words, as they say (and in this case, a lot of drool, as well).
We started off with iced tea, obviously. It was good, but I wish it could have been a tad stronger. Presentation wise it looked adorable.
"A" got the classic fried chicken, and loved it.
"V" opted for the Sloppy Joes. I had one, and it was really, reeeally good. I'd never had Sloppy Joes before, but I think they'll become a regular thing now.
I liked my dish the best. Spicy pulled chicken sliders. I don't know what they put in the sauce, but it was delicious. A thing I like about this place are the buns they use. They aren't stiff or so flaky that they fall apart because of the sauces- they're just right.
I was debating whether to get a cobbler or a pie, and settled for the cherry pie. Good stuff, but I liked "A's" dessert better. Scroll down..
Mississippi mud cake. AH. So good. It's very rich, so my friend actually suggested adding ice cream to it, which I agree with. It would be a good balance with the richness of the cake.
Overall, we had a very good experience on our first visit, and the head chef even came by our table for a little chat. I'll be back and I'm planning on taking some of my Southern gal friends there, especially when the weather cools down.
If you want to pay them a visit, here is their info:
