Some Things to do in Kuwait

A common misconception that people have when they fist move to Kuwait is that there's "nothing to do". While it certainly is no Dubai or Las Vegas, Kuwait does have a selection of activities and places worth visiting. This should go without saying, but I won't be writing about restaurants in this post because that would take me a week to go through.

If anyone else has any other places in mind worth mentioning, please leave them in the comments.

MALLS
I won't go into much detail on malls because everyone who hasn't been living under a rock knows what a typical mall consists of- shopping and food. With that said, here is a list of malls in Kuwait that are worth checking out:
Avenues Mall, Al-Rai
360 Mall, Al-Zahra
Marina Mall, Salmiya
Al-Fanar Mall, Salmiya
The Cube Mall, Salmiya
Gate Mall, Egeila
Souq Sharq, Sharq (Kuwait City)
Al-Kout, Fahaheel
Al-Muhallab Mall, Hawally
Hamra Mall, Kuwait City

SOUQ AL-MUBARAKIYA

Souq=giant flea market. Seriously, you can't come to Kuwait and not visit one of its oldest and most loved markets. You can buy everything there from household items to fake designer purses, as well as have lunch or dinner in one of the outdoor restaurants. It is located in Kuwait City and any cab driver knows where it is. You can also read a blog post of mine on Al-Mubarakiya here.

GRAND MOSQUE TOURS

The Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in Kuwait, offers guided tours of the mosque throughout the year (English tours are available). Call them on 22980800 if you would like to check out tour dates and timings.

ESCAPE GAMES

These are a new thing in Kuwait. What an escape game is, is a room where you along with a group of friends get given an adventure "mission" that you are supposed to figure out together using the clues that you are given within a given time limit. Basically, it's a real-life video game, which is a lot of fun for a group. Here are the links for both of the escape games so far to hit Kuwait (click on them to get to their websites for pricing info as well as booking inquiries):
Trapped Inn
Room of Clues

ROOFTOP CINEMA

This one is cool because unlike all the cinemas in malls, you don't have to wait an hour in a queue for a ticket, and you get to watch movies outdoors. Cheaper than standard movie prices here, and it's perfect for when the weather cools down in the evenings. You can find their screening schedule as well as prices and location here.

QOUT MARKET

Founded in 2013, Qout Market is an artisanal farmers market in Kuwait. Running on the first Saturday of November to April, it is a cool place to hang out with friends, shop for locally grown produce as well as cool things sold by small local businesses, listen to live music, and grab a bite to eat. It is one of my favorite places to people watch, too. If you haven't been to this yet, you need to change that. The food alone is worth it, so come hungry. You can check out my blog post about it here, and check them out on Instagram @qoutmarket or on Facebook.

HOUSE OF MIRRORS

This gem is the home of Lidia Al Qattan, who completely mosaic'd her home in mirrors. She gives personal tours of her home (for 2kd a person) to anyone who wishes to explore its stunning decor. Along with a tour, she talks about some history of Kuwait, as well as giving her visitors homemade snacks and drinks.
You need to call ahead to book a visit, and women are advised not to wear high heels there because that would ruin her beautiful glass floors. To schedule a tour appointment call 22518522.
It is located in Qadsiya, Block 9, Street 94, House 17

 AL-SHAHEED PARK

This cool urban park is perfect for long walks in the cooler weather. It also has an indoor hall, as well as a jogging track for those interested in fitness. It is located in Kuwait City, and- get this, has an underground parking.
Oh! And if you're into yoga, there's a "Yoga at the Park" lesson there every Saturday at 9am in the indoor hall. Bring your own water and mat and with you when you go.

ICE SKATING

The ice skating rink in Kuwait has been around forever, and is a fun way of hanging out with friends, unless you really enjoy constantly going out for coffee. The price for a single ticket is 1.5KD for 1.5 hrs or skating. Call before going because they have a schedule, and close down for around half hour every couple of hours for ice maintenance. They are located in Kuwait City, Al-Soor street, and their phone numbers are 22411151 and 22411152.

Q8 BOOKS

This charming used bookstore is a dream for bookworms. Their prices are considerably lower than if you were to buy a brand new book, and they make sure to only display books for sale that are in a really good condition. You can browse the shelves endlessly as well as sit down and skim books of your choice before buying them. They are located in Salmiya, in Bayt Lothan, right next to Marina Mall. Their opening hours are Sun-Thu: 5-9pm and Fri-Sat: 11am-9pm

PRO-KART

If you're a fan of go-carting, you will like this. Located off of the 6th ring road is a pretty decent track for go-carting. They are open daily from 11am till 11:30pm and their prices are very reasonable. They have a map on their website.
